German Slang- Umgangssprache

Slang can be defined as the use of informal words and expressions in communication. These words or phrases are not considered standard in the language or dialect but are considered more acceptable when used socially. Many languages make use of slang, including German. Slang has nothing to do with pronunciation or accent, but it is simply the words that are spoken.

Slang often includes:

  • Words considered "taboo"
  • Language that helps people to fit in with their peers/colleagues (jargon)
  • Words popularly used among young people
  • Words taken from other languages, particularly from English
