Charlemagne (Karl der Grosse in German), the first Holy Roman Emperor, began building his Palatine Chapel (palace chapel) in 786 AD. Aachen was the seat of his empire and he viewed Aachen as the second Rome. Charlemagne was crowned king by Pope Leo III on Christmas Day in the year 800. Charlemagne’s Palatine Chapel also became his final resting place upon his death in 814.
