Population and Residents

21,000 people are residents on the island of Sylt. There are eleven villages, and one town. 800,000 people visit Sylt every year for holidays and vacations. There are 12,000 second homes in Sylt. The island even has its own dialect, “Söl'ring” which is spoken by 4% of the population.


There are beaches for any type of person on Sylt. “Fun-Beach Brandenburg” is great for young visitors. They enjoy playing sports such as beach soccer and beach volleyball. Beaches such as “Oase zur Sonne”, “Saoma”, and “Sansibar” are more exotic beaches. Hörnum is the main, family-friendly beach. It is overlooked by a large red and white lighthouse. Travelers can make appointments to visit the lighthouse. Another beach is Kampen's Buhne 16. It is a legendary beach, where top managers can sunbathe side by side blue collar workers, as well as large families can be alongside soap stars. There are no social barriers on this beach.

Youth Hostels

There are many places to go and things to do for teens and students in Sylt. Students from all over Germany will travel to Sylt on class trips. They typically stay in youth hostels, which are common across Germany. Youth hostels are social accommodations. They have the feeling of a mix between a college dorm and a hotel. Students, or travelers, are given rooms that usually have bunk beds in them. Usually up to four people will stay in a single room. Guests are assumed to bring their own bed sheets, towels, and other toiletries. Meals are provided by the youth hostels. There are several great youth hostels in Sylt.

Sports and Recreation

Sylt has a wide variety of ways to stay fit and active on the island. On the Westerland's Fun Beach, many play beach soccer and beach volleyball. Visitors and residents can also visit the stables to ride horses. There are both surfing and sailing school on the island that teach classes on the beaches of Sylt. In addition, there is an 18 hole golf course that many visit on their vacations.

Art and Culture

Sylt has a lively cultural scene. Events include regular theatre performances with well-known actors and actresses, along with musicals and other shows. Classical concerts are just as popular with Sylt’s visitors as church concerts given by top guest artists. Renowned writers give readings at Kampen’s literary festival, and popular comedians make their appearance in the Meerkabarett.
